Take A Hike

Take a Hike – Joe's Woods
by John Nye Cullity

The Sandwich Conservation Trust will host a free guided walk at the preserve known as Joe’s Woods, off Spring Hill Road in East Sandwich, Sunday January 3, 2016. We will meet at 2 PM at the Quaker Meetinghouse where there is ample parking. From the intersection of Quaker meetinghouse Road and Route 6A, go north over the railroad crossing and take the next road to the left – Quaker Road. Proceed to the top of the hill and take a right into the meetinghouse parking area.

The walk will take about an hour, and is mostly level and easy-going. We will hike on to conservation parcels: 7 acre Joe’s woods – it was donated to the SCT in 1986 by Thomas Gelsthorpe, and a 30 acre piece purchased by the town in 2000 with Land Bank funds. This is an area of old, grown-up cranberry bogs and thick, bushy habitat not far from the beach.

We ask that no dogs be brought on SCT walks.  Be prepared for possible ticks, and the walk will not be held if it rains.  Feel free to call me if you have questions about the walk or the Sandwich Conservation Trust, at (508) 888-7629.
